ESB Networks applications, handled for you

Every commercial solar system needs ESB Networks' permission before it connects to the grid. We manage the whole application and the compliance documents for your business. You sign a Letter of Authority, and we do the rest.

Which application does your premises need?

The route depends on the size of your system and your grid connection. We confirm the right one at design stage.

RouteSizeWhat it involves
NC7
Mini-generation
Up to 50 kVANo witness test or Final Operational Notification. Your system is energised when installation is complete.
NC8
Small-scale generation
Above 50 kVA, up to 200 kVAG10 grid protection relay. ESB witness test about 14 days after installation, energised on completion of the test, and Final Operational Notification 3 to 4 weeks later.
NC5Larger or non-standard connectionsUsed for larger generators, or where the connection itself has to change. ESB Networks studies these individually, so we build in extra time.

Sizes are ESB Networks' current categories, and your system can't exceed what your connection allows. Timelines are typical, not guaranteed.

From first conversation to final sign-off

  1. 1

    Talk to our team

Tell us about your premises and what you want to achieve.

  2. 2

    Assessment and proposal

We assess your electricity use and your roof, and design the system.

  3. 3

    Order and authority

You sign a Letter of Authority so we can act for you with ESB Networks.

  4. 4

    ESB application

We prepare and submit the NC7, NC8 or NC5 application with the compliance documents.

  5. 5

    SEAI grant application

We prepare the grant application. No works start until the offer is in place.

  6. 6

    Installation

Our team installs the system once the connection agreement and grant offer are in place.

  7. 7

    Witness test (NC8)

ESB Networks witnesses the protection, about 14 days after installation.

  8. 8

    Energisation

Your system goes live. NC7 systems are energised when installation is complete.

  9. 9

    Final notification (NC8)

The Final Operational Notification follows about 3 to 4 weeks after the witness test.

  10. 10

    Grant claim

We prepare the claim and SEAI pays the grant directly to your business.

How long does it take?

ESB permissions can take circa 3 months, so the sooner you start, the safer your grant.

  • Our lead time from order runs alongside ESB permissions
  • If permissions are already in place, lead time is about 4 weeks
  • Enhanced SEAI grant works must finish within the 8-month grant offer
